Have you had that ‘one big moment’, a turning point, that changed the way you think? In this article, we’ll explore two parts; goals and turning points.
Life goals are people’s visions, plans and commitment to achieve. Having a life goal drives you to wake to every morning with a sense of mission, and is fulfilling when the mission is achieved. Everyone’s goals are different; whether it’s owning a business, taking care of loved ones, or following your heart desire and passion. Financial security has been my main goal. I grew up with financial hardship and have been working hard my entire life. My goal is to have financial stability so that I can take care of my family. My first achievement is when I became self-sufficient. Next, is when I can fully support my family. My ultimate goal in life is to help others to be self-sufficient and eventually support their own families. I have found my purpose!
We experience many turning points in our lives. The triggers that cause shifts in your life can be positive or negative. For some people, turning points happen from the inspiration you are given from others, while for others they come from the dark moments in their lives, when they have no other choice but to make a change.
For me, there were two main factors that shifted my life.
- Threat – Challenges are crucial to the human lives. But there’s always a way out. My biggest challenge was cancer. I’ve been through 7 operations and numerous chemo therapies for treating my third stage cancer. Each chemotherapy visit seemed more difficult than the last ones. The therapies fight cancer but also deteriorated my body. Instead of giving up, I made my mind with determination to fight this cancer, and live longer so I can take care of my mother. Surviving cancer was a miracle. Coming out from the ordeal, shifted the way I think and my values and I began to live my life selflessly.
- Vision – Some turning points are not necessarily from the dark moments in our lives. Some start changing their lives from having a vision, planning, and working towards their goals. Entrepreneur Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, has been dreaming big since his teenage years. The idea of human colony in Mars may seem far-fetched. But that never stopped Elon from working hard to fulfill his vision. SpaceX rockets and spacecraft have successfully orbited in space. NASA was impressed by SpaceX achievements and have signed billion dollar contracts to fly American astronauts to and from earth orbit. Tesla Motors is one of Musk’s aspiration to build electric vehicles, an alternative to gasoline fueled vehicles.
Change can occur from within you. Aspiration and determination will drive you to work towards your goal. Change is also triggered from external factors such as life challenges. No matter what may inspire you to change. I encourage you to start stepping out of your comfort zone and just do your best; your path to success will be fulfilling, and the destination rewarding.
