Almost everybody has a role model or someone we look up to. Certain individuals may have had inspired us and set examples in so many ways such as people who follow their passions, people who are successful. Having a role model or a mentor is very useful. Role models show us their experience, their journey that lead to their success. These are some lessons to learn from them.
Who are your role models? Is it one of these successful CEOs like Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, or Bill Gates? My role model is someone very close, my mother. She is not the world’s most brilliant, or the richest. She’s a simple woman, to me, with the warmest heart. My mother is a single mom, raise 2 children on her own. Through the difficulties, she rarely discouraged. She worked hard to prepare her children a better future. Every time I think of her, she motivated me to keep on pushing no matter the situations.
My second role model is Sansanee Sathiensup, a Buddhist nun, the founder of Sathira Dhammasathan, a Buddhist practice center. She has devoted herself in Buddhism and started workshops in self-development , class materials are based on the principles of Buddhism. Even the physical hardships, diagnosed with cancer, she hasn’t slowed down and has inspired millions of Thai, including myself. I feel connected to her experience as I also have cancer. She mentioned that at the beginning after she got diagnosed, only two of her close friends knew that she had cancer. Because she was working on a big project, and did not want to be distracted if she disclosed the news. She eventually admitted that it was not easy keeping such a secret.
“I didn’t expect that people would pay attention to my sickness. But I realized that my sickness will encourage other cancer patients and their family to stay strong. I do not focus on how long I am going to live. But as long as I’m breathing, I would live a meaningful life. That’s better than living a long meaningless life. Just like Buddha’s teaching; Every single moment, even a single night is beautiful. But we have to understand that we don’t know what tomorrow brings. No matter how short or long we live, the most important is to appreciate the value of our lives today.”
Nun Sansanee’s lessons and her work have motivated me to stay positive everyday, to do things that I love. Having a role model is like having compass that points you to the right direction. When you have reached your goal, you can also be someone else’s role model. That sounds like a bigger achievement that brings true joy. Don’t you agree?
