I believe each one of us has a dream. Some of you may think that dreams are not reality. Some are tired working towards their dreams. But we have reason to not give up. Please don’t give up just yet. Let’s look at Jack Ma as an example.
Jack Ma, a chinese man who is one of the world’s top business leaders like Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerburg. Ma co-founded and chairs the famous online marketplace, Alibaba Group. He is the first chinese businessman to appear on the cover of Forbes Magazine in 2014. He is one of China’s richest men. He ranks the 18th world’s wealthiest man, with a net worth of $US 29.7 billion in 2014. Forbes also ranked him the 30th in the world’s most influential person.
His continuing success showed when he was named Businessman of the year by Forbes China in 2015. These are some of his success which resulted from hard work. But Ma’s paths were not glitter and gold. In his early life, Jack Ma was a poor man with ambition. When he did not have money for investment, nor any connections, his way out of poverty is through education.
He struggled in college. He attended Hangzhou Teacher’s Institute, which he took 4 years to pass one exam. He graduated in 1988. Did you know that he applied for 30 jobs and got rejected by all? He was told he was not good enough. “I even went to KFC when it came to my city. Twenty-four people went for the job. Twenty-three were accepted. I was the only guy…” he said.
Ma was often asked how he coped with rejections after being rejected for 30 times. He admitted that it was never easy coping with such rejections. I could not imagine after 5 rejections, I probably never wanted another one. But Ma has took this as a life lesson and figured that he needed to do things differently.
After another failure, he decided to return to his hometown and started an online shopping website with his 17 flatmates. They started Alibaba, a marketplace for wholesalers to list their merchandise.
After 3 years he started the business-to-consumer platform and the payment system Alipay was integrated. The website has continued to grow and has good receptance from businesses and consumers. Today Alibaba has succeeded outside China. Over 800 million users all over the world have used Alibaba to find merchandise and factories. Alibaba’s IPO in New York set a record as the world’s biggest public stock offering, raising $150 billion.
Ma also gives back to the community. He was selected by Forbes Asia as one of Asia’s Heroes of Philanthropy for his contribution to disaster relief and poverty.
Ma’s story has shown us that ambition and determination is one of the keys to success. It’s important to follow your dream and keep pushing through. He has also shown us that failures and obstacles shouldn’t stop us from reaching our goals. He once said that our world is in never lack of money. It lacks of people with dreams who are willing to die for those dreams. Are you ready to follow your dreams?
