I believe that everyone wants to succeed in life. The meaning of “success” is different for each person. Some people think that working to earn a lot of money is considered being successful in life. Some might do something for others, even small acts. The path to success is different for each person.
There are five basic behaviors that if we are able to reduce, would certainly bring us closer to success.
- Stop finding excuses for yourself all the time.
Have you ever felt scared to start doing something new, so instead you find an excuse not to do it, or fear of making a mistake and being afraid that things will not work out as expected. As a result you make lots of excuses to not start doing it. But have you ever thought that if you are still making excuses for yourself, when will you make your dream come true? Stop looking for an excuse not to start. Instead, try to find a reason to do it and the results will definitely be different.
- Break off relationships with people who have bad habits.
The self-development expert Jim Rohn has said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” This is similar to the Thai saying that, “You will be like the people you surround yourseIf with”.
Therefore, choose a person who will help you become a better version of yourself. Taking that into consideration, if you know someone who has bad habits, does not respect others, always found gossiping, saying something bad against some else, or is only interested for their own gain, remove yourself from these individuals as quickly as possible.
Remember that if we spend a lot of time with someone, we will absorb and take on some of that person’s personality without knowing it. So be mindful when choosing who to surround yourself with.
- Stop telling yourself, “Just be yourself”
You might feel a bit confused by this statement, but the message is actually quite powerful. Instead of thinking of your present self, you really want to be thinking about who you want to be in the future; your future self.
When you keep telling yourself to be yourself, you may end up losing out on opportunity, take less risks and challenges. By telling yourself who you want to be, helps you to avoid regrets strive to become a better version of yourself always.
- Cease doing anything just to make other people happy / impressed.
When you do things just to make other people happy, you only end up feeling tired and stressed because they might not be important to your life at all. It may even feel worse if you do not like those people that you’re trying so hard to please.
Ask yourself, why do you waste your energy to please the people who you do not like in the first place? Wouldn’t it be better to save that energy for the people you love and respect? Do not waste your precious time and resources to please just about anyone. It would be better to use those resources to nourish your own strength so you can reach you goals. Along the way, if you find a good and sincere friend, share the positive energy together.
- Stop being afraid to fail.
Failure may sound horrible. If you can choose, no one will want to face it. But sometimes in our life, we cannot choose the outcome according to our heart’s desire. Thus, failure may not be the scariest thing. Dealing with failure is much more scary. For those who do not know how to handle it, they may not have the heart to go on at all.
I want to remind everyone that there is not only the bad side to failure, but one should look at it as a lesson and to learn from it. We should learn from our past mistakes and develop to become better, wiser and more prudent than ever.
The five behaviors (habits) mentioned above is hard to quit. Nevertheless, if you’ve got the will, nothing is too difficult. Although you may feel that you’re still very far from your goal, at least you have succeeded in taking a small step to make a difference to improve yourself. One step closer every day.
