“It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case, you fail by default.” – J. K. Rowling
Not surprisingly, our life paths are not smooth. Our goals, be it in our career, in business or even in our relationships, there are obstacles or challenges to overcome. How we handle it, will tell us which direction our life is headed.
Many of those who have achieved success or become famous, or whom we may see as idols today, have all gone through countless obstacles. Let me give you a brief example of the success of the world-famous youth literature, Harry Potter, written by J. K. Rowling. The author has sent the manuscript to more than 12 publishers and has been denied countless times. Steven Spielberg, the famous director has been rejected enrollment at a university to study drama, film and television 3 times. Even the greatest band in history, The Beatles, have been criticized by the label at the beginning of their music career and criticized as “Potentially no future in this business.” Had they quit and admitted defeat to the obstacles that came through in their lives, their success would not have been written in history as we know it today.
Obstacles and failures are a part of life. It depends on how we handle it or do we allow the barriers to pull us from our target. Let me share three ways of thinking that helped me through the failure.
1. Change the perspective that we have on failure.
People may think that failure is the opposite of success. But for me, I try to see that “Failure is success”. These obstacles that come into my life are the key lessons which help me push myself towards my goals. The pain and the disappointment is something which we all must face. Why don’t we take this opportunity to understand and gradually learn and solve problems instead of sinking into disappointment and not move forward? The most important thing is, though we fall a few times, you have to overcome it! Nobody is born successful. Nobody has the ability to ride a bicycle since birth. You may fall at first and we may need to depend on training wheels to help maintain balance. With gradual practice, we will be able to remove the wheels and continue to pedal on our own.
2. Do your best
Everytime we start something, we should always try to think, “Do your best!” We must put our best foot forward, to make full use of what we have and we will not regret why we did it. We should try harder regardless of the outcome of the results. We should not worry first.
In sports, athletes may not be able to control the weather on competition day. But what they can control is the preparation of the body and mind before the race, including the power and use of those skills during the time of competition.
And most importantly, we must be ready to accept the results that come with it. Whether it be victory, a success, or even if it did not meet our expectations. Always smile in acceptance because all of it comes from our best performance.
3. Fill up positive energy to fuel yourself towards your goal
A positive energy, a forward outlook will be the driving force to help us get closer to our destination. If anyone wants to succeed, you should fill up positive energy into your life and be happy with success even if it’s a small thing. There are many people who are still trudging in the same place because they are stuck with the thought that they have not done anything successful yet. Let’s look at the destination as a big picture which consists of many small milestones of success. They are all welcoming and we should be proud of it. Do not forget to celebrate with every step and change it to be a positive force that will take us to the next big goal.
If you are walking on a path that may not be smooth, do not be discouraged. Sit back and look around. Sometimes the scenery may be as beautiful as our goal. I would like to be everyone’s encouragement for those who are aiming for their target.
